What makes this novel a "good" example of a contemporary young adult novel?  How does it represent contemporary literature of today?

Comments

  1. To me it's a good example because it talks about issues that happen in high schools today. The author made the book relatable to some teenagers who have been conflicted with the types of problems the main character goes through, especially with having a rough family life. It represents contemporary literature of today because the conflicts and issues the main character deals with are problems that we continue to see in books today, most books from today often deal with being a teenager in high school. The language used in the book wasn't old language either.

    1. I agree with all the reasoning you had about what made Speak a contemporary piece of literature because like you said these are problems some teenagers deal with today and the home life in the book Melinda deals with is very relatable.

  2. I think what makes a book a good piece of young adult literature is when it is relatable and not out dated like references or abbreviations. Personally what makes a good book is when you can connect to the characters and have feelings about what is happening to then like being angry when something bad happens or happy when they achieve their goal. That's my opinion on it because some books that you can't connect to are boring or you lose interest in what your reading. I think it represents contemporary literature of today because the characters are dealing with conflicts and issues many teens are dealing with today.

    1. I agree because Melinda does go through tough times and many teens are dealing with the same issues. From bullying to depression lots of teens deal with the same issues and problems. I also agree that this is a great book and I think everyone should read this book at least once in their lives.

  3. To me, this novel is a good example of contemporary young adult literature because of the way it was written, new and unique. A book written in a poetry type format with the realistic conflicts some teenagers face was something that was refreshing to see. It didn't use outdated words or go with the typical slightly confusing poetry. The author reflected about the people she'd met in her life and how they impacted who she is today. She also spoke about her life choices, mistakes, and accomplishments, accompanied by sudden memories. Her past experiences often related to mine, so I found that this creates a connection with the readers.

  4. This novel is a 'good' example of a contemporary young adult literature because the author was able to capture the essence of the teenage mind and express it through this story. The way Melinda saw and interpreted the things around her reminded me of myself and my peers. That author was able to make the reader feel like they were actually in high school dealing with the joys and hardships of teenage life. The plot was very realistic and relatable, I was able to actually see exactly what was happening. Overall, this book is a very good representation of what contemporary young adult literature should look like.

  5. This novel is a good example of young adult literature because it talks about topics that happen in real life. The author took on a hard topic that happens in real life and put's it into a teenage mind. You can honestly feel the way that Melinda feels when she's sad because her friends don't like her anymore or she's mad that her parents don't get along. The author can make you feel the way the charter feels. I can't relate to Melinda or what happen's to her but the author really get's us inside her head and makes us understand what she's going threw and the million thoughts going on inside her head and i think that this is a good example of young adult literature

  6. This novel is a good example of contemporary young adult literature because some of these issues happen in real life and teens who are affected by this struggle to speak up. And it represents contemporary literature today because this book shows us that’s it’s ok to speak up and that you shouldn’t have to go through what you’re going through alone.

  7. I think this novel is a good example of contemporary young adult literature because it covers subjects that happen in real teenagers lives today. The author wrote the book so that you could tell exactly what Melinda was feeling at different points in the story, and those feelings are those that I know many of my peers have felt before. Overall this book is probably one of the best examples of contemporary young adult literature that I have read yet.

  8. This novel is a good example of contemporary young adult literature, because it expresses Melinda's feelings and emotions after being sexually assaulted at a party. The novel also goes on to show how this horrific incident affects Melinda's personal and social life in every possible way. She experiences being an outcast at her school and is dealing with the inability to feel comfortable talking to her parents about the rape, which causes her to remain quiet to all those around her. This novel represents contemporary literature of today because no matter what generation one lives in, they could experience the exact same feelings and emotions as Melinda after having gone through a sexual assault. Also, the inability to feel comfortable talking to her parents is a common feeling among most teenagers.

  9. This novel is a great example of contemporary young adult literature because it is something that teenagers and young adults happen to face. From peer pressure to depression this book covers how some teenagers face all of there years in high schools. Most people aren't as lucky as Melinda and they never get people to hear there story and actually listen. however some people get justice but in my opinion everyone should get justice because sexual assault is no joke. Melinda decides that to cope with what happened to her she is not going to talk unless absolutely necessary. this makes her parents and the people around her angry which in return makes Melinda's depression worse. Young adults today are facing depression which makes this book relatable to young adults.

  10. I read shout and I think it is a good example of contemporary young adult literature because it discusses hard topics to discuss and it helps show poeople that have dealt with rape/sexual abuse how to get through it and that they are stronger than they know. In our time many people don't accept people that have been thriugh this or they don't really understand their situation. This book helps people see what it is really like for someone to have to cope with something so heavy. I think it represents contemporary litereature today because it was directed toward young adults and is being used to spread awareness about things like sexual abuse and rape.

  11. Speak is an excellent example of young adult literature. It focuses on teens our age and real life situations such as sexual assault or trouble with fitting in. It sheds light on social status and how there are many cliques all around us. It represents contemporary literature today because it focuses on these hard topics and brings them to light. The author wants you to see the situations from the victim's perspective and what she goes through which is a fairly contemporary concept. The book is trying to spread awareness on things that could happen to anyone anywhere. These things make it contemporary because the author wants to give perspective on teens lives and the abuse some may endure today, whether it be physical, mental, or social.

The author had relatable topics such as sexual assault ,which is a big problem in our world today, friendship problems, and mental health struggles. 13. Speak is a good example of contemporary young literature due to the protagonist being a teenager dealing with a common problem, which is sexual assault (There's a trend here). She had severe guilt for ruining a party, even though she definitely needed to call the police and get help. The entire story is based on that guilt and the fear of it happening again. Like Heroine, the perspective of the victim makes for an interesting experience while making you understand how serious the issue presented is.

  14. Speak is a good example of contemporary literature because the characters are young adults and they deal with relatable problems. The story showed the struggle of coping with something traumatic that happened to Melinda and how it changed her point of view on life. You can she as she gains more self confidence and feels safer her outlook gets better. Many people probably find it very relatable the way she was ostracized and hated. Even though they don't know the full story people still hated her.
