Speak/Shout 2
Do you believe in 100 years, this novel will be considered a "classic"? Will it stand the test of time and be something that students will be reading in an English class of the future? Why or why not?
Do you believe in 100 years, this novel will be considered a "classic"? Will it stand the test of time and be something that students will be reading in an English class of the future? Why or why not?
I think that this could be a classic in 100 years, I hope it is but it might not be because of how touchy the topic is. But it could be because you learn a lot about how Melinda feels and what she is going through in her head, and that could be a good learning experience for people who have not had to struggle with that.
ReplyDeleteI agree! this could definitely be a classic in the future, however, like you said, the topic is touchy and it might not be something that schools want to read to their students because of the subject and nature of the book.
DeleteI agree. This book could be a classic in 100 years but yeah the topic is pretty touchy and some people might feel uncomfortable reading it.
DeleteI have my doubts about it being considered a classic. Although the book itself is unique and talked about an important topic, it wasn't as popular as other big books like Twilight and The Hunger Games, which might make it harder to remain noticed. I could be wrong but that's my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I had never herd of this book until this class. However, everyone knows the Hunger Games/Harry Potter/Twilight, etc I think that those book have a higher chance of becoming classics because of their popularity. Not that this book isn't amazing, it just isn't as popular as some other contemporary pieces.
DeleteI agree with Josie. I though the book was very good and the Author did a amazing job writing it i just don't think it will ever be as popular as Harry Potter or The Hunger Games and not very many people know about this book and that could be because it was published in 1999 but i do think that it is potential because there are not very many books about this topic and could be remembered for that.
DeleteI also agree. The book was amazing, but I've never heard of it or heard of anyone reading it until this class, so I don't think it would ever be as famous as some books like dustin and Josie said.
DeleteI think that this book definitely has potential to be a classic in 100 years. It is relatable and written in such a unique way. It also discusses topics that past authors haven't been able to write about. However, I also have my doubts because Speak isn't as popular as some other contemporary pieces of our time. I hadn't even heard about the book until I started reading it in this class. I think that this book is easily overlooked and is truly a hidden gem in the world of contemporary literature.
ReplyDeleteI think this book could be a classic and i think it also could not. I never really knew about this book until we read it in class but that doesn't mean it's not a good book, i think that a lot of people don't know about it because it was published in 1999 and isn't a newer book from today. I think this book could be a classic i the future for woman mostly because they could have some similar experiences, and may want to relate to Melinda ad her experience from the story, but as a guy didn't really enjoy the story very much in till the end just because i cant't really relate to her and made me feel uncomterbale at times, i thought the book was moving very slowly at the beginning because the other really didn't tell us much about her backstory, but i do think it is a possibly to be a classic in the future
ReplyDeleteI agree that it could go both ways on wether it will be classic or not. I also agree that it could become a classic through women with the same experiences as Melinda sharing it.
DeleteI think it could be a classic in 100 years because kids could learn from this a bit but it also might not be because the topic is pretty touchy. I think it will stand the time and kids in future English classes will in fact read it because of how good of a book it was.
ReplyDeleteI agree this book could be a classic in 100 years mostly because this type of incident could happen to anyone causing them to feel the same exact way as Melinda. The novel definitely has a story to be learned from, as it shows Melinda eventually coping with the effects of the sexual assault. I agree that this novel could be a popular choice in English classes of the future.
DeleteI think it could possibly be a classic novel in 100 years, but I'm not sure. Not many people have heard of this book, and normally the classic books are very popular. Also, the topic of the book is kind of a touchy topic for many people, so that could possibly stop it from becoming a classic. On the other hand, it could become a classic due to women who have gone through the same issues reading it, and then sharing the book to possibly spread awareness for the subject.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with your response. It may not have enough popularity to last the test of time but the fact that women can relate to this really plays a huge role in if it becomes a "classic" in the future or not.
DeleteI do believe this could be considered a classic in 100 years, mostly on account of the fact that this type of experience and feeling is timeless. No matter what generation sexual assault happens in, the feelings and emotions are the same for the individual. Since the book is very relatable, I definitely could see this being a book that is read in English classes of the future.
ReplyDeleteI think that this book could be considered a classic in 100 years. I think this because lots of things that happen in this book people can relate to. It involves everyday issues. Depression, rape, bullying, and so much more that real people face in real time. In todays society its sad to say that these are real problems that young adults and some adults are dealing with these problems first hand. I also think that this book has such a great message that is timeless and is a book that I think everyone should read at least once in there life. However lots of the topics are caused by todays events but the message will never stop being right and in my opinion will be considered a classic.
ReplyDeleteI read shout and I don't really think it it will become a classic just because it isn't something SUPER enticing and while it was a good book I think there are many other books out there. Speak, on the other hand (this is only from what I remember of it) has the potential. It tells a story while Shout is just a recap of events. Speak also is engaging and VERY sad (that is one of the only things I remeber about it). Although they both discuss touchy subjects, they hsve messages that need to be heard. Speak was banned from schools (that was said in Shout) because there are people who think survivors should be silent. This is another reason I think Speak has the potential. It has a maessage that needs to be heard and a very unique writing style as well.
ReplyDeleteI think this book infidelity has potential to become a classic, especially young adult women. I think it gives great perspective on a female's thoughts after a tragedy happens, that changes your life. It talks about social status and cliques in depth, which will most likely exist all throughout history. this being said, I think this book may not have enough popularity to become a "classic", it is a great book that sheds like on very important topic, however it may not have enough of a fan base to make it through history. I think this book could stand the test or time or go completely the other way.
ReplyDeleteOut of all of the other books I've read so far Speak is definitely the one that I think has the most potential. It has a difficult topic that many people can relate to. The part that makes this book so unforgettable is the fact that the main character is mute. I haven't read any books like that before and I absolutely loved it.
ReplyDeleteSpeak definitely has the potential to become a classic in the future. It is written it such an interesting way and you really don't know what happened to her, but that is what makes it so interesting. She has this terrible outlook on life and from others in the story she wasn't always like this. Its obvious that something happened to her, but its that wonder what happened and how did it happen with no one else knowing.
ReplyDelete"Speak" is quick and gets to the point fast. The main character has an interesting defense mechanism of just staying silent, and the climax is startling yet satisfying. I feel an English teacher could easily have everyone read this for a lesson on issues within society. You could also write about multiple things about the book, such as character motivation (or lack thereof), mood, and themes. Other books we have read could be analyzed like this as well, but "Speak" makes many of them clear for students who may struggle with reading. Will it be a classic in 100 years? Probably not, but it is one of the more likely ones from the selection we have read.
ReplyDeleteI do not think this book will be considered a classic in the future. although it was a good book I don't believe the book has what it takes to become a classic. Classics have strong meaning or life lessons, and although speak had a strong meaning its just not what I would consider a classic.
