  1. the components of this book that makes it a page turner for me is how it started to rapidly pick up the pace towards the middle of the books. But the book was a little hard to read at the beginning of the book but then the pace started to speed up and it got a lot me detailed and interesting. Like at the beginning of the book i was a little confused because Melinda the main character Kept referring to "IT" but later on in the book "IT" was given an identity.

    1. I agree! Whenever 'IT' was mentioned I kept wondering what that meant and why the person didn't have a name. It was a little confusing, too. That kept me motivated to keep reading because I wanted to find out what that meant. I was honestly shocked when Melinda's rape was revealed and was surprised at how long the author was able to keep that a secret from the readers.

  2. This book started slow and jumped through time. For example, when Melinda saw her ex-friends at school she recalled how close they used to be and how mean they are to her now. The beginning of the book gave a lot of background information. However, towards the middle of the book the pace picked up as the plot unfolded. The author was very strategic about what she revealed throughout the novel as well. It was obvious that something traumatic happened to Melinda, but the reader didn't know what. This kept the reader interested and motivated them to keep reading to find out the whole story. It wasn't until the end of the book that Melinda's rape was revealed. Overall, the author has a very unique and strategic writing style.

    1. I agree the book picked up momentum as the story unfolded. I also agree that the author was very strategic in how she waited to share the rape incident. That was probably the turning point where the novel picked up and became more interesting.

  3. At the beginning i honestly don't think this book was a page turner. I thought it got off to a slow start, it was just her basic day life. I feel like it began to become a page tuner when the Author revealed she was raped because that changed my entire perspective of the book and the story. I wanted to keep reading because i wanted to know what was going to happen next and if she would reveal who raped her and if she would tell anyone about it. It also became more of a page turner when he tried to rape her again, and then she finally revealed what happened to her at that party and that changed everything.

    1. I agree in the beginning of the book it was very slow to start but as soon as she started to reveal her feelings and thought the book started to get interesting and started to actually start a story. Once it became a page turner it was a struggle to put the book down

  4. It makes you wonder what she was talking about whenever she spoke of ‘IT’. It was also a bit slow to get started but throughout the book it picked up pace. When I found out what happened to her I couldn’t put the book down I just wanted to keep reading to learn more.

    1. I agree I was very curious about who "IT" was and what do they have to do with anything. It was also very slow to get into.

  5. At the start of the book, it was kind of slow-going. There was a lot of backstory, and it wasn't very intriguing to me. As it went on though, the story picked up the pace and Melinda's story sort of unfolded as we started to understand more about what she was going through. I definitely couldn't put it down as it neared the middle/end of the story, and we found out the real issue.

  6. I would never consider this novel to be a page-turner. It lacks the suspense to make it so. The novel remains very bleak and dry throughout the course of the story. However, the author does an excellent job of setting up the story so the reader understands the feelings and emotions within the victim's mind. Also, the author did an excellent job of showing the way Melinda learned to cope with the rape incident. She grew from the experience and showed Andy Evans who was in control, and it certainly wasn't him when they were in the janitor's closet.

    1. I think the author did a fantastic job of showing how Melinda coped with the sexual assault as well. By the end of the book she has become a stronger person ready to stand up for herself, she is letting herself be controlled by Andy any longer.

  7. The components of this book that make it a page turner are the story that this book has to tell. Melinda has gone through a lot and throughout the book and near the end she becomes brave enough to share her story with her family and friends. It was a book that was slow to get started because all it really talked about was high school. It was a good book but didn't go into detail of the topics. I didn't really struggle to get through the book it just did not o over all the topics in the book so it was a little difficult to understand what you were supposed to take from the book. Like when Melinda was in class with David and she started to kind of like him and she thought that he might like her that is all that was said and they didn't say that they talked to each other or even go into her thoughts more.

  8. I read Shout, I think it started off a little bit intriguing because it started off by her talking about how it took her so long to speak up. I wouldn't say it was slow paced but it was by no means fast paced. I think this book wouldn't really be intriguing to everyine because of the topics it is about, the fact that it is a memoir, and that it is written in stanza form. It is also all over the place sometimes and could be confusing for people. I don't think I will ever read it again because it isn't my style of book.

  9. Speak started of a little slow for me. I didn't really know who she was talking about because sometimes she wouldn't use names of people. However, this book quickly became a page turner for me. I really wanted to find out what happened at the party, what happened to Melinda, and overall who Melinda's true friends were. I think even after the assault and being depressed Melinda was trying to make friends in her own way, like with Heather who in the end kind of stabs her in the back and becomes a "Martha".Though it was fast paced I struggled to consistently pick the book up and read because a lot of it to me was her going different places or in class. This being said, Speak is a great book and is infidelity one that many people should read, no matter gender.

  10. Speak was a very fast paste book. The aspect I loved the most was the fact that she gave her teachers nicknames such as Mr. Neck, I loved all parts of the books but I loved the part where Melinda finally was able to speak up and tell Rachelle what happened or when the whole lacrosse team heard her tell Andy no.

  11. The pace wasn't too fast, but the book was short, which made it easier to get to the "meat and potatoes" so to speak. There was a very empty and soulless attitude throughout the book, which someone could find very deterring. There was also a lack of "hook", you just know that something is wrong but you don't know what. Once the story started dropping hints it became interesting to me.

  12. This wasn't a very fast book, but it definitely was intriguing. I did struggle to get started with the book and it didn't really hold my attention that well. There was no big thing that happened that made you really want to read it. It was just a girl going through high school with a bad outlook on life. Even like the big reveal of why she had such a bad outlook on life and who "IT" was, wasn't really that big It was kind of like here's my trauma now lets get back to complaining about teachers.

  13. I personally dont think this was a very fast book. The beginning was pretty slow and just talked about her days at school. It didnt start becoming a page turner until later in the book. We didnt really know why her friends didnt like her in the beginning because it didnt bring it up til about halfway through the book. once we found out what happened at the party more stuff started happening and i feel it was more of a page turner.
