  1. I think the characters were what really made the book "young adult". The characters are mostly teenagers that attend highschool, and some of the issues they have to deal with are very relatable to young adults. What intrigued me about this book was Starr's neighborhood and how she lived differently than how a lot of people do. What I will remember most about the book is how Starr's dad changed from the start to the end.

    1. The character arc of Maverick (the father) was great. I like how most if not all the characters went through a change for the better.

  2. The way the characters and places are described are from the view of a teenager, and as such will have language and the thoughts of one. The themes and ideas represented in the book, such as the BLM movement and the need for change in the justice system, are ideas that young adults will be growing into. It's often the young adults starting the protests which eventually spreads to everyone. The thing I will remember the most about this book is how human it felt. It's hard to describe, but it feels like a legitimate person is going through the events and is taking it realistically. I can't say I relate to a whole lot that the characters go through, but I can imagine myself reacting in similar ways.

  3. I think the characters are a big part of this being a young adult book but the theme is another major thing that makes it such. There are a lot of teenage charcaters and a lot of the big and small themes of this book are really young adult and things we as teenagers need to learn. One thing i really got out of this book is how the kept telling Starr thta her voice mattered and even though she was just a teenager she had power to change things. Something that intrigued me about this book is that even though this cop did a terrible thing, Starr didn't start blaming or seeing other cops in the same bad light as one-fifteen. There really isn't just one thing that is going to stick with me from this book, it was all just really amazing.

  4. I think its the characters are a huge part of making this book "young adult". The characters our teenagers. They are close to our age and it is put into their perspective. The story has a strong meaning/theme that help make it young adult. The part that intruiged me the most was how her family stuck with her and supported her through everything thatas going on. I will probably remember what Star said about bravery the most out off this book.

    1. I completely agree. The actions and thoughts of the characters were similar to how other teens in today's world think. Young Adult books are usually really relatable as the intended audience is the same age as the characters. Great response!

  5. The characters in this book definitely make this books "young adult". They are in high school and most of them are teenagers, fairly close to our age. Themes and the plot in this book represent the types of things that our generation is going to grow up with, such as the BLM movement and speaking up for what you believe, no matter who you are. The thing that most intrigued me about this book was how it showed how a young black girls life is like. Living where we do in the US there is not a lot of diversity. It was intriguing to me to see how Starr was affected by police brutality and the BLM movement because it is not experience based on most of our color of skin and living in the rural Midwest. What I will remember most about this book is the very last page. Angie Thomas lists black people as of 2016 that have been killed because of police brutality. I honestly teared up reading it, thinking of how many people how would have been added to this list not only this year, like George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, but how many people would have been added in the past 4 years. It has really stuck with me since I finished the booked and it was one of the most powerful, if not the most powerful parts of the book to me.

    1. i agree with lillan. In the book there was only a few people in the list that died from the color of there skin but now the list has gone way up now in 2020. This is a very serious problem in our world and i think the author really showed that in her book about what is really doing on.

    2. I agree because the characters do play a huge role in this book being young adult because they are in high school and we can relate to that because we are the same age. The color of your skin shouldn't ever play a factor in anything. It is a serious problem in todays society and it needs to be fixed because it is hurting/killing lots of people.

  6. the things that make this book a young adult lit book is the racism. The black people in starr community feel threatened and very mad when a innocent black man is killed for no reason. Theres fighting and protests and it all comes back to the night when the police offer shot the boy. This was in 2016 and now the list of innocent people killed have grown and it covers very serious topics that happen today and is a very strong book.

  7. On the Come Up contains many elements that make it Young Adult. The novel is told from a 16 year old girls perspective and the way she thinks reflects how a lot of today's teenagers think as well. Her family has struggled with racism, financial instability, substance abuse and addiction, sexism, and so many other issues that are very relevant to the world now.

What intrigued me most about the book was that its main topics are fairly new to me. I don't know a whole lot about the hip hop industry but it was really interesting to know what goes on behind the scenes of the beat on the radio.

I will definitely remember how strong Bri was and how she didn't let anyone tell her who she could be. When big producers tried to write her own songs for her, she refused and did her own thing.

  8. I think that the characters is what makes this book "young adult". This is because the characters and there past give a clear view about what it is like to have to struggle with racism and shows how it emotionally effects individuals and families. What most intrigued me most about this book is Starr's prospective and how she feels about everything happening and how it affects her. What I will remember most about this book is definitely that we have to be aware about things like BLM and police brutality even if its m=not directly effecting you, because its a problem present in todays world. This book is an amazing story and is just an over all powerful book.

  9. I think, overall, The Hate U Give presented well in characters, plot, mood, conflict, and theme, because it shows Starr's feelings, as well as the feeling of what is to be an African American in today's world. The message at the end of the novel is well shown, as Starr never fails to stand up for Khalil and speak out for what is right. Young adults can certainly relate to her feelings of being torn about fitting in, having the courage to speak up for Khalil, and her relationships with her peers, even when they have a different opinion. What intrigued me most about this book is how supportive Starr's family was to her and how the book utilized the rap artist, Tupac, with the lyrics in his music as inspiration to the black community. There is much truth in his lyrics from what I understood of them in this novel.

  10. The characters are what make "On The Come Up" young adult. Bri is a teen as well as her friends. She faces the typical teen problems like romance for example. She had to choose between her childhood crush and and her new love interest. She also faced problems with school, feeling invisible, and drama.

  11. i think this book has very young adult language and the characters really make it young adult. Starr especially whether it be with her high school problems or just her life in general. It really made me want to keep reading because I feel very deeply for her. I know what it is like to lose someone you were close with and it really opened my eyes and kept educating me on what it is like to be an African American in America today and how they go though things they really shouldn't have to just because of the color of their skin. I will remember how strong she was and how brave she was even though she was terrified of what people would do to her after speaking out.

  12. The characters for sure, they were mostly all teenagers, and some of their conflicts were relatable in a sense. Starr was a "big voice" throughout the novel. She always spoke out and spoke up for what was right. In the book, she kind of showed me that i should stand for what's right, and not to let people walk on me.

    1. I agree throughout the story Starr was the big voice she was just scared to speak up and use it. But once she did it was used for a lot of good.

  13. The story elements that make this young adult are the characters. Starr having to use her voice to speak up about Khalils murder, Seven feeling like he has to protect his siblings Kenya, and Lyric. What intrigued me most about the book was waiting to find out if the officer would get charged but when he didn't it intrigued me even more to see how they would react to that answer. What I will remember most about the book is the truth behind it because all of this happens in real life.

  14. The thing in my opinion that made this book young adult was the characters. They were our age and made it really easy to understand them in certain parts because we knew where they were coming from. the thing that intrigued me the most was the way that the people were treated by the cop and even other people. I will remember the message behind this book the most because it was so powerful. no one should be treated any different because of the color of their skin.

  15. The part that made it "young adult" was definitely the fact it dealt with such mature and modern problems that our generation will have to overcome such as racism and police brutality. The part I will definitely remember the most is when our main character Starr stood up to the cops and threw the tear gas back at them.
