  1. i think its a good example because of the dark but relatable topics it covers such as Josie's experience with sexual assault, Dayana's addiction to Xanax and her fathers Anti-depressants, Jack's struggle with ADHD and his guilt of not being good enough to protect his sister from sexual assault, Harrisons struggle with anxiety and living up to his dead mothers expectations and finally Archies struggle with trying to fit into a white family as a adopted black kid, they all make the story a great read and possibly help other people struggling come forward.

  2. This novel is a good example of a contemporary young adult novel, because it covers many issues that teens face in today's world. Each teen in the novel is going through some kind of struggle, whether it be drug related, pregnancy, loss of loved ones, sexual assault, anxiety, fitting in, etc. The way this novel represents contemporary literature today is by addressing the issues that teens are dealing with and showing ways for teens to find support, not only from friends, but from a higher authority.

  3. I think this was a good contemporary young adult novel because it really portrays what it is like for teens in the real world. It also may help some kids realize that they are not alone, weather that be with a pregnancy, drug addiction, being adopted, or even just trying to fit in in general. It represents contemporary literature of today because it helps open some peoples eyes to the fact that life isn't all rainbows and butterflies, there are people who go through a lot and people who don't and this book helped me really see that fact clearly. It shows the fact that there is always an option and that no matter what you are going through, it always eventually gets better.

    1. I agree with you on the fact that there is usually always another option when facing problems and eventually, with time, most problems do get better. Also, I agree this novel does an excellent job of showing support from peers, Dayana's parents, and even the janitor who understood when Harrison went through his panic attacks.

  4. I think this is a fantastic example of contemporary young adult literature. I believe this because you get to see teens in the current world interacting with each other. It explores pregnancy, adoption, sexual assault, and addiction, which are all example of thing that teens today can face. I also think this is a great example because of how the author shows difference is social circles, through the amount of money you family has, your personality, and who you friends are or what sports or activities you do. This part of the book was very contemporary for me because it is something that we all go through and deal with. Social status is everywhere in life today, especially in high school and in the story we see this in depth. I think this book is an excellent example of contemporary young adult literature. It represents contemporary literature today in so many ways. The author of the story is not afraid to talk about hard issues like pregnancy, addiction, and mental health, like some authors in the past have been. Talking about this issues is creating a new era for contemporary literature that is unafraid to talk about hard subjects and subjects.

  5. I think this book is a very good example of contemporary young adult literature because it shows real topics in real time. It also goes over how people deal with grief, addiction, and so much more. some of the topics are heavy but in my opinion that's what makes it relatable in todays world. Everyone I their lifetime will know someone who struggles or struggled with an addiction. this book also takes place with high school kids who would be considered young adults which in my opinion makes it more relatable. This book goes over so much that is happening in todays society which makes it a great candidate to represent young adult literature today. It makes sure to go over how everything is not what it seems. The perfect family that host tons of parties and have tons of friends really is falling apart with the dad having a affair and the children hating who they have become trying to please everyone around them by showing off what they have with parties they hate having.

It talks about drug abuse, grief, depression, anxiety, and other "taboo" subjects that don't usually appeal to an audience. All these issues in the book happen everyday to people all over the world so it can be relatable in a way.

  7. The Year They Fell is a great example of contemporary young adult literature because the author uses a combination of stereotypes and common teen issues to create enjoyable and somewhat realistic characters. The issues tackles are numerous including but not limited to; sexual assault, loss of loved ones, divorce/threat of divorce, drug abuse, and adoption. Most teenagers will have some connection to one or more of these topics, making it extremely relatable to them.

  8. The Year They Fell is a great example of young adult literature. The author ventured into a variety of topics that haven't always been discussed in literature like sexual assault, pregnancy, anxiety, violence, and adoption. This novel also talked about different cultures and languages. One of the main themes of this book is having friendships despite differences. I think that these topics are very relevant to our world today. Overall, this novel is a great example of contemporary young adult literature; it's fresh and exciting and relevant to today's teen world.

What makes The Year They Fell a good example of young adult literature today is because of how it is set in the modern day with modern day issues like drug use, adoption, concussions, etc. Another reason why it is a good example is because of how the characters are the age of the targeted demographic for the audience instead of adults or younger kids. It represents contemporary young adult literature of today because of its messages & relevance.

  10. This book is a good example because it kind of shows teens that everyone goes through things, but along the way, some good things happen. Yes, the parents died, but their friend group reunited. Yes there were conflicts, but they lived, and they learned, just as any other teenager should.

  14. This is a good example of young adult literature because it has a lot of content that is specific to young adult novels. For example, the main characters are all young adults (seniors in high school), and the book talks about many topics that young adults/teens often have to face. "The Year they Fell" goes over topics such as family/friend deaths, high school drama, drugs, teen pregnancy, and more. These are all topics that young adults everywhere have to deal with, and I think it could be very helpful for those teens to read this book and see how other teens cope with these same issues they're going through.
