What makes this novel a "good" example of a contemporary young adult novel?  How does it represent contemporary literature of today?

  1. I think that this novel is a good example of a contemporary young adult novel because the author really gets inside the characters head. As the main character travels around new york city obsessing over a girl the author really get's inside his head for what he's thinking, for example on page 223 and 224 the pages have one paragraph of just his thoughts and what's he's thinking which i like because i really feel like i'm inside his head thinking and seeing what he is seeing. Joe's thoughts and feelings are all detailed very good threw out the story, and that's why i think think this book is a good example of contemporary young adult novel

    1. I agree that Joe's thoughts and feelings are expressed through the details of the book. I also think that You is a great example of contemporary young adult literature. All through everyone else's thoughts Joe's get expressed at the same time. It truly makes you feel like you are there watching everything play out.

  2. I think that this book is a good example of young adult literature because when reading the book you continue to put things together while they are happening until you have the whole picture. Caroline Kepnes really got into the heads of all the characters and made you feel like you were watching it like a movie. She put in so much detail that you could feel like you were there listening to the conversations. I think this represent todays young adult literature because people today like to read books with lots of action to keep them intrigued. Throughout the whole book there was tons of details and plenty of action.

    1. I agree. I think that Caroline Kepnes really did get into the characters heads and gave good descriptions of there thoughts. And the detail of the book was incredibly realistic it was practically like you were right there listening to and even watching what was happening to the characters.

    2. I agree with you that the author did an incredible job of developing the characters. The book's attention to detail and curiosity of what the author would throw at the reader next was certainly what made this novel an excellent choice for readers today.

  3. This novel is a good example of contemporary young adult literature, because it is captivating in the way of being inside someone else's mind. In this case, the person is Joe Goldberg. The author does an amazing job with Joe's character, as well as Beck's, by expressing their emotions and feelings throughout the story. The novel represents contemporary literature of today by showing the vulnerablility society has with so much of their information being on display through social media, etc. In the novel, Joe is a whiz at gaining access and information about his victims. It is scary to see how this novel shows that anyone could easily fall victim.

  4. this book is a good example of contemporary literature because of all the detail you get with how they feel and what events were happening. I think that it could represent young adult literature of today because of the time period it takes in the people are age understand what they are talking about when they change words like instead of oh my god beck always said omigod which some people would be like what the heck is she saying but others would understand.and with technology also like how they used twitter and email you can tell its a little bit older like mid 2000s because that's probably when emailing was more popular and the way Joe described the way beck dressed.

  5. This book is a goodexample of contemporary literature because of how it draws you in. It makes you want to never put it down by the way the characters are described, the way the plot twists, and the way Joe's mind works. I also find it to be more relatable to recent times by how they refer to Twitter and Facebook a lot throughout the story, adn also simply by the way that Beck talks. The author did a really good job of peicing the book together so that we had time to think about what was going to happen efore it happened, and I thought that was really cool.

  6. This is a good example of a contemporary young adult literature because the author gave us a different view point in the book. She gave us the view point of Joe the stalker letting us know how he felt, thought, and what he was saying about you. The girl he stalked.

  7. This is a 'good' example of contemporary literature because it has so much detail and it really gets into the head of the character and shows you what is going on in his head. It also has so much emotion in it. You can clearly see the emotions all the characters emotions.

  8. The part that made the book a good example of young adult literature is the unique writing I found it very cool that the author would just say "you" and you would know that she's referring to Beck.

  9. I think this book was a good example of contemporary young adult literature because the author does a good job of getting into the character's head. The characters were also young adults (early 20's) and it really went deep into Joe's head and showed us how messed up the world is. It was very enticing as well and this isn't something I could see and older person reading just because of the writing style and how it seems to fit young adult brains.

  10. I think that it represents contemporary literature today because I feel that people like Joe and Beck exist. The stalker and the victim. As mentioned in one of my previous comments, i disagree that this should be a young adult book. I believe that this should be more of an adult rated book because of the graphicness in some of the scenes.

  11. I think that You is a great example of contemporary young adult literature. The author told this story from a perspective that is not commonly heard. It seems that most stories like this are told from the victim's point of view, not the 'villain'. I admire the author for being able to put herself in Joe's mind and tell the story from his perspective.

I do think that this book could also be labeled as an adult novel because of the mature themes and graphic scenes. However, the characters are young adults and some of the issues discussed in the book are relevant to young adults as well.

  12. I honestly do no think You is a very good example of contemporary young adult literature. It felt like more of a mature or adult book to me because it focused on such mature themes like stalking and relationships. I found it very hard to relate to because it focuses so much on the adults and mature themes, not teens today. The author does do a good job though of creating a new way of writing, from the villain's perspective. This being said, I do think this book is very contemporary. The focusing on these mature themes make the book feel newer and the types of relationships the characters have also contributes to this. It also helps that it is set in our current time period we live in.

  13. The novel tries an interesting, almost taboo form of storytelling. This is a common theme in many young adult novels, but to this extent it almost feels like an adult novel instead. I'm also wondering why Joe was interested in Beck at all. He doesn't really care for anyone else, so why her? Guess I can't really relate to him but that's likely for the best. The villain's perspective is also an interesting change from the victim's in most stories.

  14. This book is an example of contemp y.a.l because it's extremely captivating and unique. It's a very different style of storytelling and you can really see what Joe is thinking throughout the book. Another thing is, it makes the reader slightly confused because they don't know whether to side with Joe since he is the main character or to go against him because of his wrong doings.
