Heroine 1

What makes this novel a "good" example of a contemporary young adult novel?  How does it represent contemporary literature of today?

Comments

  1. "Heroine" is a "good" example of contemporary young adult novel because it deals with a lot of modern problems and its very relatable. All the stress she is putting on herself to get better and putting herself down. A lot of kids and teenagers deal with these problems of pushing yourself to hard, low self-esteem, and comparing yourself to other people. It represents contemporary literature because it deals with a lot of harder to talk about topic like drugs and divorce. It doesn't just skim over the top of these topics, it goes in depth about what happens and the consequences of the actions.

    1. I agree 100%. So many teens struggle with topics mentioned in this book like friendships, relationships, self-esteem, and wanting to be the best.
You made a really good point when you said that Heroine goes in-depth about drug use and abuse. Some novels touch on it but this one really goes into detail about what it's like.

  2. Heroine is a prime example of a 'good' contemporary young adult literature because it discusses topics relatively new to the YA literature industry. Very few 'classic' novels venture into drug addiction and abuse, especially as a teen. Mindy McGinnis also enriched her book with honesty and realism and it was easily believable.

This book was also easy for young adult readers to relate to. Personally, it was easy for me to empathize with Mickey because I know what it is like to be so dedicated to a sport that you would do anything just to play. Heroine is a great example of a contemporary young adult literature novel.

  3. Heroine is a good example of a contemporary young adult literature because it deals with real world problems. Teenagers, and some people recovering from accidents like Mickey can relate to this book in some way. It represents contemporary young adult literature by going head on into the topic of drug addiction and divorce. Where some authors like to go into a little bit but not a whole lot.

  4. I think Heroine is a great example of young adult literature. It shows the world in a way that people in 2020 or in the past years can understand. It deals with topics that almost all teens face. You can the the main character face issues that we can understand such as stress and friendships. It represents young adult literature because of the issues it shows such as divorce, drugs and alcohol, and wanting to succeed very badly at something. It represents a new era of literature that is willing and open the talk about things that may have been ignored or tip-toed around in the past.

    1. I agree that Heroine is a very very good representation of young adult literature. I also agree that it is one of few books that don't "tip-toe" around certain topics, and I hope that more authors start to talk more about these issues, too.

  5. Heroine is a good example of young adult literature today because it shows that your past addiction doesn't define you and that you can change and overcome it, its especially good with vaping addictions on the rise and a lot of teenagers turning to drugs and alcohol to deal with their problems.

  6. Heroine is aimed at young adults through its language and topics. A high school teenager playing a sport and struggling in social situations is something most (if not all) people experience at some point in their life. Even the topic of drugs can be relatable to a lot of teenagers, as it is a rising issue of the younger generation that we all hear about. Being a past addict could make people look down on you, but we are lucky enough to be in a time and place where writing about this issue is respected and accepted.

  7. I think Heroine was a good example of contemporary young adult literature because it has suvh a dark theme throughout the whole book and it is something many young adults today can relate to. Even if drug addictions in teenagers isn't widely talked about, it still happens and this book really shows what it is like and how debilitating it really is. Young adults can relate through the fact that Mickey struggles with interacting with people and is very dedicated to a sport. Both of these things are what kind of led to her getting so deep into the addiction.

  8. I think what makes this book a good example of contemporary young adult literature is that it some things that modern day teens can connect to. also the personalities of mickey and her friends especially with there interests. But also the issues in the book is what makes it young adult. drug addiction isn't talked about very much but ignoring it doesn't make it not a real problem in people of all ages today.

    1. I agree addiction is a real issue in real time and I think this book went over it very well. I thought it was a really cool that Mickeys step mom knew how to help her and that Mickey went to rehab.

  10. Heroine is a good example of young adult literature because of the heavy topics that many teens nowadays face. Drug addiction, forcing yourself to push through pain, losing yourself, losing friends, and divorce are things so many people have faced. The author described drug abuse, addiction, withdrawal and recovery very well. The author didn't sugarcoat anything and didn't give it a sappy ending. It was given a painfully real ending that teaches a valuable lesson.

  11. I think Heroine is a great example of young adult literature. It includes many of the concepts of the YAL industry including high school and issues with friends and sports. What I think made it better than a lot of YAL books, though, is that it highlighted drug abuse, which is not an issue that a lot of young adult literature covers. I think it's great that the book highlights it, because many young adults deal with something similiar, so they can relate to the book on a more personal level.

  12. I think that Heroine is a great example of young adult literature. It is realistic and has such great detail. It is also such a great book and almost all high school students read. Young adults have a interesting way of wanting to read something and being interested in a book. Young adult books need to have tons of actions to be a success. Heroine is full of action and real life obstacles. Everyone knows someone who has been affected by drugs and this book goes over that a lot. Mickey who was a heroine and oxy addict found out that her step mom is a ex addict. She didn't have anything in common with her step mom and really had no interest in getting to know her until this common ground was discovered. it almost in a way brought them together.

Some peoples life had been affected by drugs and addits and its a good book to read with alot of action. This is a very hard topic to right about and that why i think this makes it a goood example of young adult lit

  14. Heroine is a good example of a contemporary young adult novel, because it zeroes in on what it feels like to be in Mickey's shoes. Even if you are not an athlete, you can find this book relatable. It represents literature today as it shows the pressure Mickey is under to be well again and be able to compete for the softball season. She is also going through the fact that her parents have divorced, her dad has remarried, and she becomes an older sister. These problems, along with being well enough to play softball and receive a full ride to college, are excellent examples of dilemmas that teens face today.
