The Hate U Give/On the Come Up 2

Do you believe in 100 years, this novel will be considered a "classic"?  Will it stand the test of time and be something that students will be reading in an English class of the future?  Why or why not?

Comments

  1. I don't think that The Hate U Give will be a classic. I think that it is a really good book and the message it gives it really strong, but I think that the message has to be made clearer in the book to make it classic-worthy.

    2. I really have to disagree with this. The message to me was very clear about the BLM movement, police brutality, and racism. I think this book is giving many people perspective on what young, black people's lives are like, creating an important factor to make it become a "classic" in the future.

  2. I wish I could say it would become a classic, but it's very hard to say it would be. The issues presented are very modern and we are going through protests and reforms to try and solve them. If the real world had some sort of world changing event (I guess you could argue we already are) involving police reform and the BLM movement, the book could represent a sign of the times and become a classic.

  3. It may very well be a classic in bthe future. While other books do go into the same topics as 'The Hate U Give' they just don't seem to really dig as deep into it and really show you what is happening. 'The Hate U Give' is almost a rude awakening like you think its bad its actually worse. While it is showing you these terrible things that are happening, it also shows you all the good that is happening around them like ho wclose their family is and how much ofa family their community/neighborhood is.

    1. I agree. I think it really went in depth with hat it is like as an African American teenager and I think some people really need to realize how bad it actually is for them. I knew it was bad but I read this book and it is much worse than I realized (like you said). It also really portrays the bonds of their community and how much of a family the whole neighborhood is because those are the only people that treat them right.

  4. I think The Hate You Give will be a classic in the future. I think this because its about real world problems that are happening right now. In 100 years kids will be learing about 2020 and how crazy it was. This story takes the real world problem and puts it into a kid our age's perspective. The book gives off a strong meaning and that is the key for storys to become classics

  5. i think the The Hate you Give will be considered a classic in the future because this is a topic that covers real world things. Things that happen in this book do happen in real life. There are black people that are shot or killed for the wrong reasons and that's exactly what happens in this book. And you never know this kind of topic could still be going on in the future, people will proabaly be interested in the past of black shooting and be very interested

  6. I definitely think the Hate U Give will be considered a classic in the future. It is different from so many books written before. The way Angie Thomas go so in depth into Starr's life and thinking is very impressive. This book also gives a fantastic perspective into lives of people of color and their communities. You can see how police brutality and BLM affects the people in Starr's community and Starr. I think this book sends a very clear message about police brutality and racism. Readers in the future, who could live in a very different world than we do, can look back on this book and see how black people and people of color we treated in this time in our country.

    1. I agree that this novel gives a very realistic view into the lives of African American people living in today's world. I also agree this novel does an outstanding job of giving a message to the reader about police brutality that many African Americans face everyday.

  7. I do not think On the Come Up will be a classic in the future. I can't say my life has changed since reading it and there isn't a blaring message either. Although this novel is a very good read, it isn't relatable for some teens as it focuses mainly on Hip Hop and the music industry. I do appreciate how real it is about certain issues today but I cannot see it becoming a classic.

  8. This book is a great book, but I don't think that this book will become a classic. Because these problems are still very very present in todays world and will unfortunately most likely still be there in the future. The hate U give is a powerful book that can be relatable form many people but I don't think that is all this book will be until change truly happens.

  9. The Hate U Give is a good read, and I actually could see it as a classic in 100 years because, unfortunately, I feel the mistreatment of blacks will be an ongoing problem for years to come. I believe future English classes will be able to relate to this novel and find it interesting to read about the possible similarities of this novel to their lives 100 years from now.

  10. I don't think On The Come Up will be a classic in the future. It's an eye opening story with realistic conflicts but it isn't a very "popular" book per say. It discusses the issues of being a young female in the hip-hop industry, which isn't common in books.

  11. I do think The Hate U Give will become a classic. It is very relevant to today and will still be in the future. It is a book that keeps on giving and teaches a very important lesson. It is a pretty popular book and even a movie which only helps my case. I think it discusses very important things that many young adults aren't really educated on. Which is why I think it will be a classic, for educational purposes.

  12. I think that The Hate U Give will become a classic in 100 years because of how relevant it is to today. I also do believe that people in English classes will read it as well to learn from. This book itself is a very good educational source.

  14. i think this book will be a classic in 100 years considering right now they are reading it in English classes. i think it will represent the year of 2020. It is my hope that people in the future can look at this book and be in shock that people were treated different because of the skin that they were born with. I think this book will stand the test of time because it has such a amazing message and i think that this book should be read by everyone.

  15. This book will definitely be the one most likely to be just as popular in 100 years. I know that it is already being read in English classes today to teach the students about racism and to not be apart of the problem. I hope that in 100 or so years that when people read The Hate U Give they think about how crazy it is that people of color were treated this way.
